Attendance Remediation

The Minnesota Legislature recognizes that poor academic performance is associated with school nonattendance and is often identified in students as a gateway behavior to delinquency. Early intervention is one of the most effective ways to ensure good attendance habits that will lead to improved student learning and academic achievement.

Nicollet Public School has procedures and policies to support regular school attendance. Students need to be in school regularly in order to learn. Parents and guardians are responsible for their child's school attendance. School Social Workers are well-suited to address truancy issues when necessary.

When attendance patterns are not kept, School Social Workers receive referrals from educators to help students and families. School Social Work services include consultation with staff, interviews with students and families, referrals and coordination of services with community agencies.

Utilizing the Response to Intervention Model (RtI), School Social Workers work with families to help identify any barriers or services families may need to assist them in improving a students' school attendance. If the pattern of nonattendance continues, parents and students may be referred to more intensive interventions outside the school. Throughout this process School Social Workers continue to provide services that increase student attendance.
